LACK OF TRANSPARENCY OVER RUSHED MIGRANT HOUSING COMPLEX IN SCOTTSDALE

REP. JOSEPH CHAPLIK CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY OVER RUSHED MIGRANT HOUSING COMPLEX IN THE HEART OF SCOTTSDALE

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Representative Joseph Chaplik, a conservative businessman and Scottsdale resident, expressed his frustration with Scottsdale’s mismanagement of a rushed housing project in McCormick Ranch.

“On June 27, the Scottsdale City Council pushed a housing agenda item with little opportunity to prepare themselves or take public comment,” Rep. Chaplik remarked, “and, to nobody in Scottsdale’s surprise, their decision cut against what residents want—safe neighborhoods.” Item 40A in that meeting would spend $940,000 to fund hotels housing border migrants and the homeless in McCormick Ranch. The city and managing organization wouldn’t vet these migrants and Scottsdale residents would have little insight into their background. Instead, the city of Scottsdale would rely on the already-overburdened federal agencies tasked with protecting our border.

“Problem is,” Rep. Chaplik commented, “our border protection is already unable to vet each migrant crossing the border. We really have little idea who these people are and where they’re staying in our community.”

This has all been quietly rushed.  Rep. Chaplik, who has been battling homelessness and Scottsdale’s mismanagement of the situation for years in office, said, “This has all been quietly rushed. The least Scottsdale could have done is provide the public the time to comment and be transparent to voters on the details. Even though the item has been passed, Scottsdale is still responsible to us, the people of Scottsdale, to release the details of this ill-founded housing project — who is staying in our neighborhoods, where will they stay, and how does the city plan to protect Scottsdale residents?”

Rep. Chaplik represents District 3, which includes Fountain Hills, Rio Verde, North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, Anthem, Desert Mountain, and surrounding areas.
