FHUSD April 26 School Board Meeting – Surplus Property and Funding Options

WHAT

  • This was a work study session, so no votes were held.
  • The primary topic addressed at the meeting was information about options for disposition of the Four Peaks campus.  Discussion covered the statutory requirements for sale, lease, or exchange of the property and the parameters to determine whether voter approval is necessary.  Discussion was also held regarding the rules about capital overrides, M & O overrides, and capital bonds.  This included details about how each of the options would affect property tax rates, the options for bond repayment, and related issues.
  • In order for any voter approval to appear on the November 2023 ballot, a decision must be made in approximately the next month.

WHY

  • As a result of past drop in District enrollment, the Four Peaks School campus has not had students for about 10 years.  Portions of the building have been rented out to businesses, but the building is in need of major repairs.  Current projections do not suggest it will be needed for students in the foreseeable future.  The District also owns other parcels of vacant land set aside years ago for school buildings.
