Representative Alex Kolodin Legislative Update – 5/7/23

Rio Verde Foothills Water Crisis

Still negotiating language on Rio Verde water bill HB2561. Goal is to get water for Rio Verde by summer. Alex Kolodin wants to show that the state legislature is solving problems that the city, county and governor have been unable to address. Bill needs to be voted on this week ahead of the budget.

1st Amendment Protection

Still working on amendment to political prosecution bill SB1418

Probate Reform

Working on probate reform bill SB1291, which has bi-partisan support.

Election Integrity

HB2322, which designates the Secretary of State’s July 2020 Signature Verification Guide as the minimum requirement for comparison of signatures was vetoed by Katie Hobbs.

HB2319, which affirmed that courts are to interpret election laws in the interests of transparency, was also vetoed by Katie Hobbs.

SCR1002 is a ballot referral to prohibit Rank choice Voting in general elections.

State of Emergency

HCR2039, which is co-sponsored with Joseph Chaplik, prohibits the governor from declaring a public health emergency for more than 30 days without legislative approval.

Municipal Tax Code Commission (MTCC)

Working on blocking SB1189, which is a continuation of Municipal Tax Code Commission (MTCC). There is problematic language in existing law which would allow Hobbs’ appointees to write ESG and tax increases into the tax code for cities by continuing the Municipal Tax Code Commission.

Intervention in Cases to Defend State Laws

See press release on legislative intervention in cases to defend state laws and fight against federal overreach (strategy for dealing with Democrat Governor and Attorney General).
