Arizona Legislature – Week Six Legislative Update – 2-18-2023
Week Six Update From The Legislature
This week was devoted to the Governor and her learned abilities to VETO Bills. The week started with what Republicans thought would be a big win on a budget. However, instead of following the Legislature’s lead by passing the continuation budget, the Governor vetoed all 13 Budget Bills. Now, it is back to square ONE.
Remember the budget deadline is June 30, 2023…don’t plan on any vacations, Legislators! You will still be working on DRAFT Number. Nothing like killing the budget and sending our leadership into a tailspin. Check out Bills SB1523 –SB1535, that were all vetoed on 2/16/23.
Other exciting legislative action was primarily devoted to long committee hearings as legislators raced to meet the 2/17/23 deadline, of having Bills heard in committee in their chamber of origin.
Bills not yet heard in committee are now dead for the remainder of the session unless the language they contain is amended onto existing live Bills (for example Striker Bills).
Check out these Bills:
- HB2316= Rep. Matt Gress made a HUGE mistake by voting NO on this Bill. Because of his vote, the Bill died in Committee and any further movement. This Bill referred to the federal government; mandatory vaccinations; prohibition. Not a good move Representative.
- SB1695= This is a great Bill introduced by Senator Jake Hoffman, regarding election violations; disenfranchisement; new election.
- SB1485 national popular vote; interstate agreement and SB1486 voting; ranking; ballot format; keep an eye on both of these. Right now, they do not possess a threat (Both Democratic Bills), but you never know.
